IMPORTANT ADOPTION INFORMATION
We often have shelties available which are not listed on our web site.
Please Fill Out an Application if you would like to provide a home for one
or any of the dogs available for adoption below, or Contact
Us for more information.
We do not have a central shelter facility. All our dogs are housed in private foster homes. You must be willing to travel to the foster home to meet and adopt your Sheltie. If you are interested in a particular dog, please be aware that we must first work through our adoption process with you. Once you have filled out an application, it will take some time before you can meet any dog. We work hard to match the right dog to the right home and it is through this adoption application procedure that those decisions are made, so please be patient while we work you through the process.

Click here to read valuable information to help you choose a sheltie from our program that best fits your lifestyle. Click here to also read a special story about adopting an older dog. Are you worried about adopting a sheltie with hip dysplasia? - You need not be. Among our 398 rescued shelties there has been some diagnosis of hip dysplasia. Our rescued shelties have done fine without surgery and should do fine for an adopter if their weight is kept down. While we don't recommend sports activities for these shelties, or power walks, there really is little other effect on their daily lives. It is a fact of the dog world that hip dyplasia exists but the dogs these dogs give no less love and appreciation to their adopters than any other dog. There also is little add'l expense to managing these shelties. So please do not over look shelties in need for this reason. Hallie runs faster than most dogs despite her condition! Chloe gets right in the middle of all the foster home's activities and is bothered not at all by her hips. |
Now for a showing of our dogs that need your help...
Just like the heartbreaking Pedigree dog food commercial some of our dogs have been left behind while others are adopted. While some of these dogs have some special needs, all are loving shelties that want a home of their own.

![]() Shir Khan |
M | 10 yrs | 14" | 20lb. |
Shir Khan is a delightful 10 year old purebred sheltie with a truly wonderful attitude. He thrives on hugs, cuddles and a couple of walks a day to help him lose some extra weight. He is healthy, up to date on his vaccines and heartworm preventative and is remarkably agile for a senior dog. A true "velcro-sheltie" he just wants to be nearby his foster mom and brother all the time. His house manners are perfect, he is crate trained and walks very well on a leash. He always comes when called and will let you know if he needs to "take a break". He is well behaved at the groomer and is an excellent watch dog. He barks appropriately when the doorbell rings but friendly when meeting new people and other dogs. Previous owners reported that he also enjoys the company of cats. This very handsome and special boy is deserving of a loving forever home. He came to Indiana Sheltie Rescue when his owner was called to military service. He is a petite boy (about 13-14") and will be 20 pounds at his ideal weight. |
![]() Amber |
F | 6 yrs | 13" | 12lb. |
Amber is a little firecracker of a sheltie . Weighing in at about 12 lbs and 13 inches and zipping around the yard we have wondered if she really is the age 6 her records indicate . Amber had been shaved by her previous owner but her new coat is coming in beautifully . Amber is a bi-black sheltie with black being dominant . A fenced yard is best for Amber so that she has enough opportunity to safely romp, play and run off energy . She has not been evaluated around children or cats . We think if Amber had her choice she might be the only dog but she does get along well with other dogs . A no obligation application is available online if you think Amber might the sheltie for you ! |

Muffin |
F | 6 yrs | " |
Muffins may look a little different to you. She is what is known as a double merle. Muffins is 6 years old and a larger sheltie . Unscrupulous breeders sometimes produce shelties such as Muffins. Indeed she did come to sheltie rescue from a breeder. Indiana Sheltie Rescue offered to take Muffins into our group when the national sheltie rescue network was asked to help Louisville Sheltie Rescue by taking all of their shelties because the foster home was having a surgery that was to take a lengthy recovery time. Hoping that others would help our group if we were in need we extended help and took two Kentucky shelties . It was helpful to me to have the benefit from the first foster home to know what to expect Muffins to be like and how to help her get accustomed to new surroundings. Indeed I have found it to be a character building experience for myself and you might also. Muffins is partially blind and partially deaf . At some point she had a lump in or on her left ear which was surgically removed leaving some scar tissue on her ear. Just wiping her ear with a baby wipe has kept it clean. Muffins has quite a personality and has settled in nicely at my house - her foster home. She gets on well with other dogs and enjoys the company of humans. The doctors have diagnosed that Muffins sees light and shadow. I dont know how that decision was made but I cant argue with it. Muffins clearly follows me around the house and yard. She navigates our steps easily and has no trouble finding her dinner bowl - ha ha! Muffins can hear sufficiently enough to live easily in my home too. Indeed it would not be a good idea to have her loose on her own but in a safely enclosed area she gets on just fine. Muffins apparently thinks sofas or big dog pillows are the best place to sleep and will play with the other dogs and with toys. Muffins is helped around by wearing a harness. She is used to the kind that hook on her back. I understood that Muffins does not do well in a crate and she has not been using a crate at my house. I hope that a special adopter will see the value in giving a home to this special sheltie who really is quite beautiful with her white coat . I have taken her out to our pet store booths and she greatly enjoyed the outing and meeting everyone that stopped to say hi! Giving a home to a sheltie with disabilities might offer it's own unique and special rewards to that lucky person that takes the chance. It has caused me to pay special attention to how she may see or hear something and much more aware of the world around me - and Muffins. There are no other known health issues with Muffins except that I hope to her about 10 lbs lighter . |

He is average sheltie size at about 25 lb and 16 inches and his temperament is typical Sheltie. ![]() Abby |
F | 5 yrs | 20" | 30 lb. |
Abby is about 5. Abby must not have had much socialization as a puppy which is so important. She has a challenging time meeting new people and dogs. When Abby is allowed to get to know people and dogs on her terms she gets on just fine with them. She is a playful and very obedient sheltie. She is naturally well behaved in the home and needs no calling in from outside as she is always at the door ready to come back in once the door is opened. Abby's best buddy is Nick. She and Nick play, eat and sleep together. Abby has no health issues and is very athletic. |
![]() Nick |
M | 6 yrs | 18" | 30 lb. | Nick is about 6 years old and 18 in tall and 30 lbs. Nick is a well behaved and attentive sheltie . He is nicely mannered in the house and on car rides which he enjoys. Nick gets on well with other dogs and people. For safety and exercise he needs a fenced yard . Nick is looking for his own family and will not disappoint them with his loyalty And love. |
![]() Koda |
M | 11 months (July 2008) | 17" | 20 lbs | Koda is about 11 mos old as of July 2008. He is a handsome sable merle with blue eyes. His coat is pretty shades of browns. Koda stands about 17" at the shoulder, weighs about 20 lbs and is of athletic build. Koda came to us from a shelter where he had been placed in a drop box there. Koda gets along well with other dogs and loves to run and play with them. He has not been evaluated with children or cats. He must have a fenced in yard in which he can safely run and play and run off energy. Koda is a healthy sheltie that is quick to learn routines. The challenge with Koda is that he is extremely shy and scared of many things. With a lot of patience from his adopter, he may be able to gain much more confidence. |

Ginny |
F | 8 yrs | 17" | 30 lbs |
Ginny is a lovely, 8 yr, sable merle, female who is 17 tall and weighs 30 lbs. She has a strikingly lovely face with her 1 blue eye and 1 brown eye and a very full coat. Ginny was given up to the local animal shelter by her senior owner because the owner was unable to care for her any longer and was falling over her. Unfortunately, the owner had also let her get into very bad shape. Ginny weighed 50 lbs and could not walk when she came into foster care. But now 20 lbs lighter and on joint supplements and thyroid medication she is feeling much better and can get up and walk easily. Ginny does have hip dysplasia in both hips so will need to stay on the joint supplements permanently. Despite her physical issues, Ginny is such a wonderful girl that we are hoping her angel is out there waiting to adopt and provide a new home for her. She is always happy to meet new people and enjoys all ages though it would be best that children be old enough so as to respect not stepping on her. While Ginny doesnt play with them, she does live well with other dogs and cats as long as they dont pick on her. Ginny does not require a fence but does need a home all on one floor or with just a single step up or down as her hips do not allow step climbing. If you are looking for an enjoyable, happy new family member that wants nothing more than to hang out with you and keep you company, then Ginny is the girl for you. |

Toni |
F | 6 yrs | 17" | 40 lbs |
Toni is a 6 year old sable and white female sheltie whose elderly owner passed away. Toni had not been exposed to much of the world during her time with her owner so has devloped shyness as a result. Toni is a pleasant sheltie whose foster home reports plays well with a young sheltie in the home. Toni is a bit overweight at 40 lb and would do well to lose 5 lb or so. Toni will do best in a fenced in yard and has not been evaluated with children. |
